There is no need for any specific knowledge of batteries or their charging methods; the Multi US 3300 will take care of it. The Multi US 3300 utilizes a four-step automatic charging cycle. First, patented desulphation functionality allows for possible reconditioning of batteries that have lost significant power due nonuse. This is followed by Bulk Charging, when 80% of charging takes place; then Absorption Charging which completes charging up to virtually 100%; and finally Pulse/Maintenance Charging, in which the battery receives a pulse of electricity when the voltage drops below 95%, keeping the battery in perfect condition indefinitely when it is not used. If the battery is loaded and the battery’s terminal voltage drops to 12.9V the charger automatically switches back to the beginning of the four-step cycle. Also, the Multi US 3300 can be connected for months and it is specifically developed for seasonal vehicles. The Multi US 3300 is specifically developed for different needs, vehicles and batteries. With this in mind user have a choice between three different modes. The low-current mode (the motorcycle icon) is perfect for smaller 12V batteries such as motorbikes, lawnmowers, jet skies, snowmobiles, etc. The higher current mode (the car icon) is for automotive or marine applications with larger batteries. Finally, an additional winter mode (the snowflake) is specifically aimed at charging and maintenance in cold weather. It is also perfectly suited for Optima Red Top batteries. A very light and compact charger, but still extremely robust and water and dust resistant (IP65 classification), the Multi US 3300 is designed to charge and maintain batteries, no matter the weather, temperature or situation. The Multi US 3300 is certified for use between –4°F and +122°F. All CTEK models are designed to consider the safety of the user. They are spark free, making the connection much easier and safer considering the gases batteries normally produce. The Multi US 3300 is also protected from reverse-polarity connections and is short-circuit proof. ** Ripple describes the quality of the current and voltage. A high current ripple heats the battery and shortens its life. A linear charger has a current ripple of 70–400% which is much larger than the maximum 5% for a modern sealed battery. High voltage ripple could harm other equipment that is connected to the battery. I own two of these excellent chargers - they are very simple to operate and very durable.
The chargers are weatherproof, and you can permanently mount them in the engine compartment with the provided ring terminals, or just use the alligator clips.
The charger has a battery status indicator (low / full), and settings for Motorcycle, Car, or Gel battery. The charger cycles from trickle current, to pulses, and shuts off when the battery is full. There is no better charger for winter storage battery tending, bringing nearly dead batteries back to life, or just recharging boat batteries slowly overnight.
Finally, I should mention that the current version of the 3300 has some improvements over the already excellent older version (I now have one of each). The latest version includes:
- Heavier gauge wiring
- Much heavier and more durable alligator clips
- A nice zip-up storage case

This is the best charger ever. I have a lead plugged into my motorcycle, and 2 cars and I rotate it between the 3 of them and they start up like th battery is brand new. This will pay for itself just in not having to buy a new battery. Don't think you'll find something similar at wal mart for half the price. Don't go cheap as this is the best and well worth it.

This charger, as well as the current (more popular) Battery Tender chargers are both made in China. This charger seems to be superior to my Battery Tender chargers in that it appears to be well sealed, of a more modern design, spark proof. Enclosed in a two piece cast housing, not an aluminum box. The charging algorithms will bring back a sulphated battery in some cases. It has three different charging settings, and brought my sulphated APC UPS battery back to limited life. It is particularly well suited for small motorcycle size batteries as well as larger batteries. It may be left connected indefinitely.

My only complaint is the cheap power cord that gets as stiff as a broomstick in extreme cold. . . . . $%##@!! cheap plastic covered power cords, anyway!

As another reviewer mentions, this is the same charger sold by Porsche at over twice the price. I bought this to charge a dead battery and by the next day the car started like a champ. I'll be using it to maintain the battery from here out when I have the car in storage and don't expect any more battery problems.
